Video mapping brings the facade of Haus Am Horn to life. (Visualization: Lea Brugnoli)
Published: 23 August 2023

»How do we live? How do we want to live?« Facade Projection at Haus Am Horn

The Haus am Horn facade projections, created within the scope of a project of the MediaArchitecture degree programme in the 2023 summer semester, will be presented on 31 August and 1 September 2023 during the Bauhaus Weeks. All interested persons are warmly invited to attend.

Eight international students have utilised analogue and digital techniques as well as tools to develop an expressive visual language and story, which will be projected as a video animation onto the façade of the Haus am Horn, bringing it to life. Coordinating sound compositions will reinforce and underline the visual impression. The project is being implemented in cooperation with the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar.

The aim of the student seminar in the 2023 summer semester was to artistically and technically execute concepts, sophisticated and ambitious in terms of content and design, for an audio-visual façade mapping. Students’ own research and experiments concerning the historical Bauhaus exhibition as well as the experimental history of the Haus am Horn served as the basis for the realisation of this project.

The content of the project provokes numerous questions on the topic of living, including contemporary private and collective dimensions of living: what story does the house tell us? What might the daily routine of a family in the house have been like? What is my daily routine like? What types of housing have I lived in so far and how would I like to live in future? What are our thoughts today on the connection between housing, living and working, and how does this vary depending on forms of cohabitation?

Background

In 2023, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will celebrate the centennial of the historic Bauhaus exhibition of 1923. The Haus mm Horn was the only experimental house built for the Bauhaus exhibition according to the design of painter Georg Muche. A synthesis of the arts, it demonstrated how building, art, craftsmanship and technology are linked in a new form of housing which, as a functional organism, explored the relationship between private and collective dimensions. The house’s furnishing was conceived and executed by master craftsmen and apprentices in the Bauhaus workshops as an intricate record of achievement for the collective work of the Bauhaus.
