CITY CYCLING 2023: Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Cycles for the Climate Protection
In 2023, Climate Alliance, which is the largest European city network dedicated to climate protection, is once again calling on municipalities and their inhabitants to cycle as many kilometres as possible for three weeks between May and September to help support climate protection and promote cycling. Weimar will participate in CITY CYCLING from 26 May to 15 June 2023. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will take part for the second time and warmly invites all members of the university to join its team.
Complete as many everyday journeys as possible by bike in a climate- and health-friendly way for 21 days – that’s the goal of Climate Alliance’s international CITY CYCLING campaign. Last year, 79 people joined the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s team and cycled a total of 9,517 kilometres – that’s roughly equivalent to the distance from Weimar to Bangalore in India. Can we maybe break the 10,000 kilometre mark this year?
All members of the university are warmly invited to join the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar team and to help avoid CO2 emissions and to work together to improve the local cycling infrastructure. Every kilometre counts – whether it is cycled for private or professional purposes. The Sparkasse Mittelthüringen savings bank will donate one cent for every kilometre travelled to projects to improve cycling in Weimar.

»Whether a professor, member of staff or student, all members of the university have to travel to the university and between the university buildings. Besides walking, cycling is by far the most sustainable option – and is also beneficial to your health. The cycling referendum (Radentscheid Weimar) that was signed by more than 6,000 people also showed that a considerable need for action exists in many places to improve the cycling infrastructure in Weimar. So let’s support the CITY CYCLING initiative together,« encourages the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s Environmental Officer, Steven Mac Nelly.
To further boost team spirit, two events will be held that all interested parties are warmly invited to attend:
Kick-off event at 4:30 pm on 30 May | »Auf Feiningers Spuren« [»Following in Feininger’s footsteps«]
Meeting point: Outside the Main Building
Route: Approx. 17 km | Belvedere Palace – Feininger Tower – Ilm-Radweg cycle route
Final event at 4:30 pm on 15 June | »Schlösserrunde« [»Castle circuit«]
Meeting point: Outside the Main Building
Route: Approx. 20 km | Tiefurt – Kromsdorf – Denstedt – (Oßmannstedt) – Webicht
It’s well worth taking part – not just for the sake of the environment
Climate Alliance awards first-rate cycling-related prizes on the national level to the teams that cycle the most kilometres on average.
