Material History, Building Component Hunters and Fresh Perspectives: Prizes Awarded for Top Final Theses in Architecture and Urbanism
Outstanding final theses were awarded prizes at this year’s graduation ceremony in the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism on 11 November 2022. A total of 51 projects were submitted and the jury awarded three prizes and eight honourable mentions Following the presentation at the Eiermannbau, all award-winning projects will be displayed in the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Main Building from 17 to 30 November 2022.
Jury members Katja Fischer, Programme and Project Manager at IBA Thüringen, Dr. Sandra Huning, Associate Professor for Urban Planning at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, and Thomas Wittenberg, Vice-President of the Thuringian Chamber of Architects, granted the prize money donated by the Thuringian Chamber of Architects equally between the three Master graduates:
- Laura Großmann for her academic study of the Neumarkt »Gartenviertel«, in which she developed sustainable development strategies for aging single-family housing neighbourhoods;
- Katharina Wittke, whose thesis focussed on reuse practices in construction, a subject that is understudied in urban studies;
- Marie Heyer and Nora Iannone for their joint thesis, which seeks to give environmental resources renewed value though storytelling.
»A lot of the projects tackled the current challenges in planning, building and designing an environment in an engaging and creative way«, said jury member Dr. Sandra Hunting. »Both the designs and the scientific papers show an increasing awareness and interest in the evolving social and production conditions. Topics such as materials recycling and reusable material cycles are becoming increasingly important, as are new spaces for community and new methods for managing complex planning processes.«
As honourable mentions fr their thesis, Felix Balling, Jessica Michelle Deistler, Henrieke de Boer, David Gripp, Jan Overmeyer & Julius Simon, Hai Tom Nguyen, Johanna Schulze and Enikö Zöller will all receive one-year subscriptions to the trade journals »bauwelt«, »DETAIL«, »Arch+« and »Die Planerin«.
