»Let’s Balance and Talk!« – A Discussion Series with Survivors of the Shoah on Seat#12 Art Installation
On Thursday, 5 October 2023, a discussion series with Shoah survivors and their descendants, speakers from Israel and Germany, and lecturers and students from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will take place on campus as part of Thuringia’s ACHAVA Festspiele. All interested parties are warmly invited to join. The series will take place on »Seat#12«, a seating installation by artist and Faculty of Media staff member Jenny Brockmann. The installation will be exhibited in the Main Building especially for this day and is intended to inspire a lively space for discussion.
The first part of the event, »Speaking Media«, a collaboration between bauhaus.medien.bühnen laboratory and the ACHAVA Festspiele, will be made up of two discussion rounds moderated by students of Media Culture from the Faculty of Media. Guests include Auschwitz survivor Pavel Taussig and renowned Israeli curator Avi Lubin. Additional guests include Frank Eckardt, Professor of Urban Studies and Social Research, and Nathalie Singer, Professor of Experimental Radio, as well as students from the Faculty of Media and the interested public. The series examines the summer semester’s »Speaking Media« work module topic from multiple perspectives. What can »Speaking Media« signify in relation to memory and commemorating? And how can the knowledge of witnesses and their practice of remembering be passed on?
The second part, »Politics of Speech«, organised by ACHAVA Festspiele, will be held on the same day and director Martin Kranz will be inviting guests to discuss how to maintain and practice a culture of talking. Discussion panel guests include Bauhaus-Universität Weimar President Prof. Peter Benz and Weimar’s Mayor Peter Kleine.
The event is taking place as part of the 100th anniversary of the first major Bauhaus Exhibition in 1923. Further information can be found at https://www.uni-weimar.de/de/universitaet/profil/bauhaus2023/.
