Dare to Design – German Design Graduates Show 2023 with participation of the Faculty of Art and Design

From 1 September to 8 October 2023, the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (MK&G) will present 53 outstanding graduates from 23 renowned German design and art academies from the fields of product and industrial design under the title »Dare to Design«, including five works from the degree programme in product design. Initiated and curated by German Design Graduates of the German Design Council, the presentation offers an overview of the most current positions of young design from Germany like no other exhibition. The annual group exhibition is being held at the MK&G for the first time.

In view of the challenges of our time, designers in particular are called upon to experiment, to break new ground, to take risks and to find surprising solutions. The projects of the young generation often make a direct contribution to a more ecologically sustainable, socially just and technologically innovative world. The topics of the theses include police violence, children's rights, empowerment and inclusion, but also the coexistence of humans and animals, the development of new materials and the potential of invasive plant species. The exhibition aims to provide a platform for graduates to present these groundbreaking ideas to a wider audience and to engage in dialogue with others, experts, producers and visitors. As one of the largest design museums of its kind, the MK&G is an ideal venue for this.

The exhibiting students of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar are:
Marvin Fonfara with with »Inclusive Product Design«
– Design Sensitive to Diversity (B.A.)

Marie Kurstjens with »COOK/ABILITY« – A Service Concept for Self-Determined Cooking in Everyday Life for People with Tetraplegia (B.A.)

Julia Huhnholz and Friedrich Gerlach with »The Essence of Biocement« – Bio-Fabricated Chair Made From Recycled Building Material (B.A.

Lena Vogel with »algae« – On the Utilisation and Integration of Microorganisms (M.A.)

Beatriz Oria Lombardia with »(non-) local lab«– Exploring the Problems and Potential of Invasive Plant Species in Thuringia Through Design (M.A.)

Once a year, graduates of German universities are invited to submit their work to the German Design Graduates initiative. With diverse perspectives and in a multi-stage process, this year's top-class jury of nine experts selected 47 positions for the exhibition at the MK&G. From a shortlist of 14 designers, four winners will be selected to receive the GDG Award, which comes with prize money of 2,500 euros. The four most outstanding graduation projects will be announced at the opening of the exhibition on 31 August 2023 at 7 pm.
