In early May, the Museum of Forced Labour under National Socialism was inaugurated at the former Gauforum in Weimar. The permanent exhibition showcases unique and largely unknown materials from the history of forced labour, providing visitors with the opportunity to deeply immerse themselves in this aspect of Germany’s past through eyewitness accounts and interactive features. The documents, images, and case histories on display have been gathered over many years of research in archives across Europe, the United States and Israel. They tell the story of forced labour, focusing on the relationship between the German majority society and the forced labourers.

How will artificial intelligence change our society? Do algorithms influence our politics? Can digital technologies make trusting more difficult? These are questions being investigated by Junior Professor Dr. Maurice Jakesch, newly appointed computer science professor in the Faculty of Media at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. His professorship for Computational Social Science uses computer systems to gain insights into social issues. Jakesch and his team analyse large volumes of data utilising machine learning methods, conduct online experiments and test AI prototypes of their own design. Their aim is to attain a better understanding of the opportunities and risks presented by algorithms and AI systems. In the following interview, Maurice Jakesch answers the most important questions about the newly created professorship and the Computational Social Science field of research.

On 7 May in Erfurt, Weimar student Sema Yilmaz was named best young talent in the category »Arbeiten von Auszubildenden und Studierenden« (Works by Trainees and Students) 2024 by buildingSMART Deutschland for her Bachelor’s thesis »BIM und Baustoffe« (BIM and Building Materials). Her work involved analysing eco-indicators of building materials and transferring object-related material properties into digital data models. The jury explained its decision saying the up-and-coming engineer of building materials thus made an important contribution to environmentally sustainable construction.

Der Umnutzung von Kirchengebäuden haben sich im Winter-Semester 2023/24 fünf Bachelor-Studierende an der Professur Bauformenlehre im Rahmen ihrer Bachelor-Thesis gewidmet. Diese Arbeiten sind nun unter dem Thema »Im Wandel« bis 8. Juni in der Kirche Divi Blasii in Mühlhausen ausgestellt.

Am Dienstag, 21. Mai 2024, lädt die Bauhaus-Universität Weimar zum Neuberufenentag ein. Die Gründerwerkstatt neudeli der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar lädt am Donnerstag, den 23. Mai 2024, ab 16 Uhr zum Sommerfest »neudeli Open« ein. Der Nachmittag in der Villa des Startup-Inkubators bietet Einblicke in die Welt der Ausgründungen, des Unternehmertums und der Innovation.

Am Samstag, 11. Mai 2024, lädt Weimar wieder zur »Langen Nacht der Museen« ein. Auch wir sind mit den historischen Bauhaus-Stätten im Van-de-Velde-Ensemble und einigen Mitmach-Stationen dabei. Kinder können sich zum Beispiel auf Einzigartiges zum Ausprobieren freuen - wie wäre es mit einem Autogramm von Walter Gropius oder einer »nutzlosen Wunschmaschine«? Die Universitätsgalerie »nova space« in der Berkaer Straße 11 öffnet ihre aktuelle Ausstellung »zero is the moon«, dort gibt es um 18 Uhr eine Führung und um 19 Uhr eine Performance.
