Project description

As an ambassador of the Bauhaus, democracy and the city of Weimar, the Gropius Zimmer Pavilion was in Weimar's Italian and French twin cities, among others: in Siena at the foot of the Cattedrale Metropolitana di Santa Maria Assunta, one of the most important examples of Gothic architecture architecture worldwide; in Blois on the terraces of the Jardin de l'Évêché, side by side with the equestrian statue of the young Jeanne d'Àrc and at the same time vis-à-vis the town hall on one axis with the mayor's office.
In Trier, the pavilion is now being erected on the extension axis to the entrance and reception portal of the cathedral on the Domfreihof. In this position and symbolism, he raises the question of which space today - in contrast to the spatial concept of sacred medieval architecture - defines our idea of community and culture: What are the shared values that are conveyed through the design of public space? What does the Christian triad – faith – love – hope – today refer to? Is there public space in public space that we can help shape and design on an equal footing? And if so, what motivates us to do so?
In this way, the pavilion enters into a dialogue with the respective existing building at each location, defining a previously unfamiliar space in which the relationships are re-explored and common values are re-determined - similar to a good conversation with an acquaintance who stays for a short time...
