Project description

In our course "Transmedial Photography" of the summer semester 2021, it was once about reflecting on the experience with pandemic-related online teaching, but also to experiment creatively with it. In terms of photography, we looked for strategies to produce time-specific imaging possibilities and to be able to make the face-to-screen experience visible in the process of visualization.
Students were initially invited to experiment with a whole range of different techniques. Analog pinhole camera images and cyanotypes were digitized for subsequent presentation as part of the low-res quality of a collaborative online session. Image views were frozen by keystroke to be able to create chat portrait series. Under direction we created so-called screenshots to be able to capture chat group portraits. With the help of digital coding, image algorithms were adjusted to generate new looks with existing motifs using different pixel compositions. Selfies taken with the cell phone provided the template for staging with the analogue view camera.
In addition to the practical experimentation, we dealt with the content of different strategies of post-digital photo artists who, in approaching their subjects, also reflect on the photographic apparatus and digital tools, as well as the associated possibilities and limits of visualization itself.
