Project description
Cities will change rapidly in the next decades. But are we expecting change by disaster - or by (urban) design?
This exhibition ffers insights, discussions and inputs for the furthering of alternative views and planning approaches for urban life after growth. It is motivated by the essential acknowledgement of the devasting effects of city planning based on the consumption of scare resources, political authoritarianism, lacking forms of self-realisation and cultural closure which is dominating today’s urban societies.
While theoretical reflections and many bottom-up projects are having pointed at a potential change of paradigms regarding urban life and urban planning, a further workout of proposals for a new perspective for cities in the light of the amounting challenges is still missing.
With this seminar, the necessary reorientation for thinking, writing, researching and projecting urban life beyond growth is intended to be taken. Students form arts, architecture, and urban studies join forces for creating a learning and cooperation platform for a post-growth Weimar, Thuringia, university, neighborhood etc. Thus, one focus lies on combining creative and scientific techniques to record stories and ideas connected to the idea of a post-growth city.
In doing so, the seminar reflects upon the themes of conference "Postwachstumsstadt" that was held in Weimar the 10./11. of May 2019 and marked the first ever confluence of urban design and degrowth scholars and activists.
