Project description
When living in cities apart from the ones we love, communication becomes rarer and purposeful. Chance conversations and spontaneous play are harder to come by.
This project set out to find those moments of our daily lives that make the non-obvious differences between collocated and remote relationships, and to design an object that could bank on those findings.
The resulting prototype is a digital place mat, meant to open new opportunities for communicating during any meal time. By sending a signal of availability to the user’s loved ones while being used, it invites them to initiate a phone or video call and share this small trivial moment, just as they may spontaneously do, if they were under the same roof.
