Project description

The ruins of the Chiesa dei S.S. Luca e Giuliano stand on the southern edge of the old town of the southern Italian municipality of Grottole. In terms of urban planning, it occupies a conspicuous position, which makes the church not only a local sight, but also a regional landmark. The Chiesa Diruta was built at the beginning of the 16th century on the site of two chapels dedicated to the saints St. Luca and St. Giuliano. For 200 years it was considered one of the most important buildings of the diocese until it was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1694 and given the name 'Chiesa Diruta'. For a long time, the already destroyed church was used as a venue for local events, until it was completely abandoned and left to decay at the beginning of the 19th century. Today, a ruin remains that only hints at its former splendour.

DESIGN TASK

The design task envisages a revitalisation of the building. A concert hall with a small café and shop is to be built within the historic walls. The concert hall is to provide a cultural impulse for the slowly dying town and strengthen tourism, which is currently the driving force behind the town's redevelopment.
