Project description

The master thesis analyses the process of filament winding and visualizes possible potentials for the application of this manufacturing process in product design. By changing the material system to a natural fibre yarn in combination with a new matrix material, strong fibre composites can be combined with the properties of the flexible yarns in one single component. Through various experiments, the resulting possibilities for innovation were explored and these innovative approaches for handling fibres in components were summarized in a catalogue.
The resulting study visualizes a selection of the possible innovations that could be developed through the interventions. The prototype consists of two modules connected by a hinge made from textile and can thus be used in different configurations. In cooperation with the TITK Rudolstadt, the components were produced on a CNC-controlled winding machine from hemp yarn and cured with a matrix material. The resulting object does not predefine a fixed usage scenario but rather allows for experimentation and the ability to experience the performance of the newly created material and construction system with your own body. Thereby, the different surfaces and applications of material can also be explored. Depending on the position, you sit on soft or hard surfaces, straight or at an angle, with or without backrest.
