Project description

***** Power

Rarely is a topic discussed as heatedly as gender-sensitive language. On the one hand, the accusation is made that gender-sensitive wording would disfigure the language. On the other hand, masculine or binary language excludes at least half of our society.

The ten posters of the exhibition "Language is *****" pick up on this discussion, address existing prejudices and provide visitors with a helpful language guide. The interactive installation also empowers people to actively confront linguistic discrimination, and shows that language can be changed; whilst the possibility for change lies in our hands – and words.

The poster series serves to visually support the existing language guidelines of the Equal Opportunities Office and the Diversity Department of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Concept and design were developed by Carmen Draxler in collaboration with the Diversity Department and the Equal Opportunities Office as part of the seminar "Make Them Seen, Make Them Heard" of the Faculty of Art and Design.
