Project description

Lightvessel is an analog image display device that adds a sense of depth and dimensionality to my photographs. The layering of materials brings these images into a realm outside of photography and allows me to incorporate other mark-making techniques into each composition. The images in this series illustrate nature in states of decay or decomposition. The duality of nature is presented, beautiful and horrifying, parallel to my own fears of a virus.

Social distancing limitations led me to rely more on digital working methods and 3D modeling software. Working digitally to develop machine-ready individual parts inspired me to begin making video renders of the sculpture and to experience the work in virtual spaces. This working process was similar to my daily routine since the lockdowns began, where most of my activities have been divided between my “normal” and my digital life. I wanted to reference this duality in this series. The physical object is only unlockable after the purchase of the Non-fungible token (NFT). The NFT is a direct representation of the physical object, animated in a 360-degree view. The owner of this token can receive the physical sculpture via postal mail shipped to anywhere in the world at no additional cost.

For ‘The Sum,’ I will present a selection of prototypes, drawings, and digital visualizations of the Lightvessel here on the Sum website. Additional information be published on KnownOrigin.io/Bixby on the release date.
