Project description

Reinforced concrete frame and wall structures are one of the primary lateral load-resistant systems in multi-story buildings in moderate and high seismic regions. Different numerical models are used to predict the inelastic behavior with varying capabilities and complexities. Failure modes, stiffness degradation, ductility and hysteretic characteristics are the main characteristics to be evaluated to predict the structural response.

The current Albania earthquake has shown again that inadequate design of multi-story structures quite often leads to heavy damages and improper response. At the same time, there are often difficulties in reproducing observed damages in the analytical models. Thus, proper tools and understanding are necessary for the reinterpretation of structural response as well as the development/improvement of design guidelines

In this study, different approaches of modeling the RC walls in structural analyses of buildings are discussed and compared. This work considers the contribution to the QuakeCore 2019 Competition as well as the gained experience from the joined field mission organised by the ACI Technical Committee 133 to Durrës (Albania), affected by the earthquake occured on 26th November 2019.

It further introduce the topic of the currently running M.Sc. thesis.
