Project description

Social virtual reality systems enable users at different locations to come together in a shared virtual environment. While the ability for such distributed users to move around in these environments as a group can greatly enhance the possibilities for collaboration in these spaces, the development of appropriate group navigation techniques has been largely neglected by the scientific community.

In my thesis, I adressed the topic of joint group navigation for spatially distributed users by proposing a design framework on the formation of virtual groups, building on principles known from social psychology. In addition, I developed an extension of Multi-Ray Juping (a virtual navigation techniqe for co-located partners, which has been developed in Weimar) for remote users. Results of a study involving 20 user pairs could show a clear benefit of the extension for this use case.

The results from my Master's Thesis were incorporated in a paper which was published in an international journal on Virtual Reality. The corresponding paper "Getting There Together: Group Navigation in Distributed Virtual Environments" can be found on the website of the Virtual Reality and Visualization Research Group: www.uni-weimar.de/de/medien/professuren/medieninformatik/vr/research/multi-user-virtual-reality/getting-there-together/
