Software and Tools

When developing and presenting your digital semester projects, you can make use of numerous tools and applications that are made available through the Service Centre for Computer Systems and Communication (SCC), the eLab of the Center for Institutional Development, the faculties or the University Communication. We try to update or extend this list regularly.

Using existing software

The Service Center for Computer Systems and Communication has made numerous software programmes available on its website. These programmes are released for use within the university network and can be used by students and teachers of the university, typically free of charge. You can find a detailed overview with a description of the areas of application and the applicable conditions of use as well as contact information here:

Creating videos

There are many ways to create videos, the selection of which depends strongly on the desired size, content and result. With a digital camera or smartphone, you can record short videos yourself and, if necessary, cut and edit them. There are numerous freeware tools for this purpose, such as the VSDC Free Video Editor, SimpleVideoCutter or Windows Movie Maker

The university offers several applications for recording explanatory videos or lectures

Video recording (= screencast)
Lectures or conversations can be easily recorded from home using the video conferencing systems Adobe Connect, BigBlueButton and DFN-conf and, if necessary, edited with an editing program. Lecture recording can also be done using MS PowerPoint.

Hosting videos

Please provide videos about the »Vimeo« platform. These can be embedded in the university's website in accordance with data protection regulations. If you do not yet have a »Vimeo« account, you can become a member of this video platform free of charge. This opens up the following possibilities:

  • 500 MB weekly storage space for uploading, up to 5 GB storage space for the entire account
  • Download converted video files
  • Password protection and other default privacy settings for your videos
  • Upload up to 10 videos per day
  • Create 1 channel, 1 group, and 3 presentations

Please note that the upload volume is limited to 500 MB per week. So be sure to finish your videos in time if a staggered upload is required for capacity reasons.

You can find more information about »Vimeo« on the following page: vimeo.zendesk.com/hc/de/articles/224818307-Standard-Mitgliedschaft

For data protection reasons, »YouTube« videos cannot be embedded on the pages of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. However, you have the possibility to link videos provided on »YouTube« via a text on the University's website. Please indicate in the text that the link leads to the platform »YouTube«.

Due to the limited upload volume and legal restrictions, the use of the university's »Vimeo« channel is only possible in exceptional cases and after approval by the University Communication.
