Project description
For months, students of the Faculty of Civil Engineering are eagerly awaiting the concrete canoe regatta. Under the direction of Dipl.-Ing. Thomas Bock, F.A. Finger-Institut for building construction material, they prove: Concrete can swim! And very fast. "The aim is to use the strength and watertightness of the building material concrete so that light and robust canoes are created," explains project manager Bock. In this way, the students learn to playfully deal with the building material concrete and at the same time work in interdisciplinary teams.
Two women's and men's teams from Weimar each start on June 28 and 29 to best complete the 200-meter competition on the Neckar in Heilbronn. However, not only sporting excellence, but also creativity in the design of the boats are awarded. The project combines technical know-how, experimentation, design and team spirit. Already in 2015, the design of the Weimar concrete boat "The Great Gray" was awarded at the concrete canoe regatta.
The event for sports enthusiasts from vocational schools, polytechnics, colleges and other institutions where concrete technology is taught is taking place for the 17th time. The concrete canoe regatta is organized by the German cement and concrete industry.
