Are you an EU citizen?
Please request the European Health Insurance Card ("EHIC”) in your home country. This also applies to students from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
Please note that your health insurance coverage in Germany may be different from that in your home country. Please inform yourself on insurance protection in Germany from your health insurance company in your home country.
Are you a non-EU citizen?
We recommend that you first arrange a travel insurance policy in your home country to cover your initial period in Germany. When you arrive in Germany you can then set up state health insurance. We are happy to help you do so.
If you have arranged private health insurance for your stay in Germany, you must arrange for the state health insurance company in Germany to exempt you from mandatory state health insurance. Contact your insurance comapny for further information. Simple travel insurance is not sufficient and only recommended for the initial period.

If you have private insurance you cannot switch to statutory health insurance later. For private health insurance you must first pay for all medical services yourself and will be later reimbursed by the health insurance company.
