Free Movers

Free Movers

Spending time abroad during your studies as a Free Mover is different from completing an exchange with a partner university: you are responsible for organising your studies (admission procedure) and generally also for the financing.

Application

Applying as a “Free Mover” above all means taking the initiative as early as possible. The International Office can only offer very limited support during the preparation phase, as you are personally responsible for all necessary steps – from obtaining preliminary information on the courses offered at your chosen university to the admission and enrolment procedures. You must clarify all matters yourself with your chosen university and your faculty.

You should begin preparing your trip at least 15 months before your planned departure. The first step is to choose a university.

Tips and advice

When you first make contact with the university you wish to study abroad at, make it clear that you only wish to complete part of your degree as a “non-degree-seeking student”. This will simplify the application and admission procedure. The tuition fees for studies leading to a degree qualification are often considerably higher, too.

Do not underestimate the difficulties involved in securing financing to complete part of your studies abroad as a “Free Mover”. Bear in mind that grant applications often need to be submitted very early on (12 or more months in advance).
