Uni-Bibo goes mobile: University Library introduces catalogue app
It was ready just in time for the beginning of winter semester 2015/16. The mobile version of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar's online catalogue is now available for smartphones and tablets. The »BibApp« application offers users on the go easy and convenient access to a huge variety of functions in the library catalogue.
The free app is available for both iOS and Android devices and can be downloaded on iTunes or the Google Play store.
BibApp lets users conduct research in the University Library's online catalogue and the Common Union Catalogue (GVK). The app makes it easy to view scanned tables of contents. Users can also order and reserve media with their mobile devices. Access to user accounts enables the administration of borrowed and reserved media. BibApp also makes it possible to compile and send lists of materials. Of course, general information about the library's hours of operation and contact details is also available through the app.
The library director, Dr. Frank Simon-Ritz, says that the University Library of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar was making consistent efforts to stay in step with changing user habits. »As a modern university library«, says Simon-Ritz, »We cannot retreat into the mindset that we are simply a lending station for printed media. Electronic media have become increasingly important in recent years. The only responsible thing to do is adapt the catalogue to new developments.«
As early as 2011, the University Library integrated »BibTip« into its catalogue. BibTip offers recommendations for other, related titles based on specific hits in catalogue searches. In addition, since 2015 the University Library has been offering short video tutorials called »BibClips« via the Internet on the functionalities of its catalogue.
