»Mise en scène in the Era of Historie(s) du cinéma«
In an essay of 2000 published in a book on the hallowed concept of mise en scène in cinema, Raymond Bellour questioned the classical understanding of this term, and endeavoured to expand it for our 21st century of audiovisual production. Is mise en scène, any longer, solely or primarily concerned with »bodies in space«, with the staged choreography of performers within an environment, in relation to a static or mobile camera, as it was in the glorious era of 1950s cinema – the kind of cinema (from Japan, USA, France, Italy) we in fact see so much of in Histoire(s) du cinéma? There are indeed some moments (such as text readings) staged for the video camera in Histoire(s). But Bellour suggests that, within the framework of a general theory of the organisation of images and sounds, we also need extra terms to grasp Godard’s formal work in Histoire(s): mise en phrase, mise en page – thus letting key aesthetic elements such as graphic design, sound editing/mixing, and visual montage thoroughly transform the idea of mise en scène in cinema. From my own perspective of research into theories of film style and methods of analysis, I will pursue this goal in relation to Godard.
