What does it mean to resist? And how does one resist? Freud claims that everything that interrupts the continuation of (psychoanalytic) work is resistance. But because almost everything interrupts the continuation of this work, is there then or can there be anything else but resistance? Can one not resist? This set of seemingly simple, yet highly intricate questions delineates the conceptual framework within which Rebecca Comay, professor for philosophy and for comparative literature at the University of Toronto will unfold the peculiar relation between resistance and repetition that will ultimately show why true thinking is akin to driving with both the brake and the accelerator pedal down at once.

Rebecca Comay is Professor of Philosophy and Comparative Literature and Director of the Program in Literary Studies at the University of Toronto, where she has also taught in the Jewish Studies and German Departments.
