With 32 photographs and accompanying texts, the exhibition documents the locations of former synagogues across Thuringia, some of which have been completely destroyed or built over, while others have been preserved as memorials. The exhibition highlights the history of Jewish communities and how we deal with this cultural heritage today. Manuel Aust, scientific associate for Design and Complex Theory of Buildings at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, says: »We have been working for quite some time at the professorship on the topic of an appropriate architectural expression of Jewish life in German cities today. We are so pleased that this exhibition, which deals with the role of synagogues as a visible sign of Jewish culture, can now be shown at the Bauhaus-Universität.«
The opening of the exhibition will be held on 17 December 2024 at 6 pm in the Main Building of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar at Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 8. School classes and other interested parties can book free group tours during the opening week. The exhibition was curated by Judith Rüber, and the photographs on display were taken by Jan Kobel.
