»Queens of Structure«: Role Models for Women in Civil Engineering

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will be focussing on the achievements of female leaders in engineering during the 2024 summer semester with an outdoor exhibition and accompanying guest lectures. 18 portraits of successful female engineers will be on display with the intention of inspiring women in particular to pursue a career in engineering. Engineer Agnes Weilandt will be giving a guest lecture at the vernissage on 25 April and examining the exciting question: »How do we want to plan and build in the future?«

What do New York’s Brooklyn Bridge, London’s »The Shard« skyscraper and the London Eye all have in common? »Each of these buildings were planned and built by women in senior positions«, explains Christin Sirtl, Deputy Equal Opportunity Officer at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Together with the Director of the Institute of Structural Engineering Prof. Guido Morgenthal, Sirtl is bringing the »Queens of Structure« travelling exhibition to Weimar. The exhibition will be on display from 25 April to 15 July and openly accessible to anyone interested.

18 portraits of female engineers from a wide range of disciplines make up part of the exhibition. Displayed on bright yellow panels, the women describe selected projects they were part of and challenges they faced. Agnes Weilandt, Camilla Lewerenz, Roma Agrawal (in English) and Donata Trost will be giving four guest lectures in April, May and June, providing insights into their professional lives. A career brunch with the guest speakers will be held exclusively for female students in Weimar, allowing young women to discuss planning their careers in an informal setting.

Promoting Women in Engineering

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. A series of events will be held in 2024 under the title »Plan B«, highlighting the research and teaching of Weimar engineers. Promoting young women in engineering is essential to counteract the current shortage of skilled workers. Female role models, such as the two junior professors recently appointed to the Faculty, are paving the way for future generations. With women making up around 48 percent of the student body in the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is already a more attractive option for women. This development will continue to be supported through events such as the upcoming lecture series.

»QUEENS OF STRUCTURE«
Outdoor Exhibition
25 April to 14 July 2024
Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

To kick off this event, the Equal Opportunity Office and the Institute of Structural Engineering are inviting all interested parties to the opening event on 25 April: At 5 pm, Prof. Agnes Weilandt, one of the engineers featured in the exhibition, will be giving a talk in Lecture Hall A of Marienstraße 13 asking the question of how what we want construction to look like in the future. This will be followed by a project presentation, a tour and drinks in the exhibition area starting at 6.30 pm. We warmly invite you to come by!

Further information on the exhibition and accompanying programme can be found on the Equal Opportunity Office website: https://www.uni-weimar.de/de/universitaet/struktur/zentrale-einrichtungen/gleichstellungsbuero/queens-of-structure/
