New Issue of the »Bauhaus.Journal«, the Magazine of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Now Available

To mark the start of the 2021/2022 winter semester, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has published a new issue of its »Bauhaus.Journal«. The magazine shares insights into recent projects and developments at the university, and reflects the approaches and views of students, alumni and staff.

»Universities are institutions where social changes often become visible at an early stage, since the most diverse people from all conceivable backgrounds with diverging ideas come together here every day. To be able to best bring all of their interests and goals together, a highly democratic way of interacting with one another is needed, as ideas can only be furthered together. We sought to emphasise this aspect in particular in this issue. I am delighted that we have been able to achieve this so successfully together with our creative and professional journal team comprising staff, students and alumni,« says Claudia Weinreich, press spokesperson and editor-in-chief of the Bauhaus.Journal.

The latest issue of the Bauhaus.Journal shows the university as a place where a sense of community is lived – practical solutions are found for pressing social issues thanks to the interaction between all participants. In the opening interview, university President Professor Winfried Speitkamp reflects on the university as an organism from his own personal perspective.

One special focus of the magazine is climate change. University staff work intensively every day to find climate-friendly, sustainable solutions for our living environment. A selection of projects are presented in this latest issue – in particular as part of the New European Bauhaus, an initiative in which the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will participate in the long term. Professor Eckhard Kraft and Milena Hufnagel from the Climate Working Group propose ways to achieve a climate-neutral campus.

The second section in the Bauhaus.Journal is devoted to the university as a place for strengthening social cohesion. Many members of the university are committed to encouraging the greater participation of minorities and opposing discrimination of any kind, and focussing on the university as a whole. Bauhaus guest professor Mirjam Wenzel also looks at the growing polarisation of society and how we can counteract this. The Bauhaus.Journal presents three examples of the unusual ways students have found to work together under pandemic conditions and still maintain a sense of community.

The topic of the third section in the magazine is the growing digitalisation of daily life. It draws the focus to areas of research such as the digital humanities and describes how the new digital possibilities are changing – and even strengthening – the international exchange between universities.

The Bauhaus.Journal was designed by staff, students and alumni of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. An online edition can be viewed on www.uni-weimar.de/bauhausjournal. The magazine is available via the order form on this page, directly from the University Communications office at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (Amalienstraße 13, 99423 Weimar; Mon–Fri, 9 am–2 pm) and in the Bauhaus.Atelier.

For printing reasons, the English version of the Bauhaus.Journal can only be published in November 2021.
