2022 Long Night of Academic Writing: Together with »Writers for Future« for Greater Sustainability in Writing

Which strategies and tools can help us to work in a more environmentally friendly way? Which initiatives and research projects are committed to sustainability in research, writing and publishing? And how does a library become more ecological? The 8th Long Night of Academic Writing will take place at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar on 23 June 2022 from 6 pm until midnight. With its motto of »writing for future«, it aims to raise awareness for greater sustainability in everyday writing and research. Visitors are invited to take advantage of the more than 20 different offers in German and English to inform themselves, try things out and discuss these, both in person and online.

The Vice-President of Student and Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Christian Koch, will open the event, after which the author Theresa Hannig will take the audience in the Audimax and those following via live stream on a journey to a world without nation states, any concentration of power or competition for resources. The »Writers for Future« activist will read from her utopian novel »Pantopia« that was published in 2022, which tells of a surprisingly successful new world republic with equal rights for all. In the ensuing discussion with Dr Katrin Richter from the university library, the author will talk about future perspectives and the »Writers for Future« initiative. Attendees can get involved in the discussion in person or online via the live chat.

Another ambassador for sustainability could be recruited through the cooperation with »Writers for Future« and the Leipzig Climate Book Fair in the form of Stefanie Rückert. In her creative writing workshop, she’ll work with like-minded individuals to conceive positive stories about everyday life in a climate-friendly future.

A sustainability workshop, a short film programme from the Faculty of Art and Design, and an exhibition on sustainable projects and research work by students, doctoral researchers and alumni complete the themed programme.

Scientific writing is also considered in all its facets. The Writing Centre of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena will offer a workshop in German during which strategies and techniques for the entire writing process are provided, along with suggestions of approaches to ensure successful sustainable reading and writing during undergraduate and doctoral studies. Before the workshop, the young tutors will also share tips and tricks on all aspects of academic writing during an open writing support session.

During a round table discussion, representatives from the university library, various student initiatives and academic staff concerned with the increased visibility of queer feminist and postcolonialist topics and literature on National Socialism will discuss the »regimes of knowledge« in libraries and how to deal with new topics and questions. The initiatives and their concerns will also be presented; these will among others include research into the history of the buildings at Marienstrasse 13/15 and Bauhausstrasse 11 during the National Socialist regime.

Two other offers focus on reading. Dr. Simon Frisch (lecturer for film and media studies) and Dr. Sebastian Lederle (from the Professorship for the Philosophy of Audioisual Media) will discuss reading as a practice, cultural technique and way of life in an open dialogue. During the »Open Mic« reading session, students and alumni of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will have the opportunity to present their literary text projects for the first time.

In the late-night workshop »Our writing spaces collaborate on our thoughts« with Celina Berghaus from the European Media Culture programme, the settings in which academic texts are produced will be examined more closely and their influence on thoughts, concentration and writing explored.

With seven mini-workshops in German and English on the use of translation programmes, the creation of accessible documents, comma placement in English, research in different subjects and the long-term documentation of digital data as well as information stands among others on student publication projects and the LUCIA publishing house, there are plenty of other opportunities to gain information and exchange.

Finally, young researchers from all across Thuringia will show in the »Transformation« poster exhibition how their research helps to encourage a society that thinks and acts sustainably. The posters displayed are part of the young talent competition that the Bauhaus Research School is running in cooperation with the Thuringian Alliance for Engineering (Thüringer Allianz für Ingenieurwissenschaften). The audience is invited to get actively involved here, too, by voting online for the poster that they find the best. The second part of the competition – the live elevator pitches – will be held at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in the following week, on Engineering Day (29 June 2022).

Participation in all of the events for the Long Night of Academic Writing is free for members of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and guests. Due to the limited places, registration for the workshops is recommended. For the full programme and information on how to register, see: www.uni-weimar.de/lange-nacht
