A policy was passed by a large majority in the October Senate session in favour of using gender-sensitive language at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The university has acknowledged that language is constantly evolving.
Prof. Dr. Jutta Emes, President (interim) of the University, affirmed: »Our university has proven that we place the utmost importance on creating an educational environment that is inclusive and free of discrimination. In using gender-appropriate language, we can and will address individuals respectfully, regardless of their gender. This is not something that will change in the future.«
Context: In the November 10, 2022 session, the Thuringian Landtag approved a motion that, among other things, urges schools and universities to refrain from using gendered language. The university policy recently passed by the Senate regulates the uniform use of gender-neutral language or wording that is made gender neutral through the use of an asterisk in university administration. This includes study and examination regulations, as well as job postings and websites. The freedom of research, art and teaching in terms of language is key. Students must not benefit nor be disadvantaged by the use of gender-appropriate language in the context of examinations.
