Presentations at the VSVI seminar about traffic safety

On November 21st, the VSVI seminar "Traffic Safety of Roads" took place in Erfurt. In addition to the police Weimar and other road safety experts, the members of the Chair of Transport System Planning, Mr Raimo Harder and Mr Johannes Vogel also spoke.

The VSVI Thuringia (Association of Road Construction and Traffic Engineers) is a registered association that has set itself the target of professional, technical and scientific training of road construction and traffic engineers in Thuringia. In this context, the VSVI regularly offers seminars and excursions. On November 21st, the seminar "Traffic Safety of Roads" took place, which was organized by Mr Raimo Harder, staff member of the Chair of Transport System Planning and Member of the Presidium of the VSVI Thuringia.

In the opening presentation, Mr Harder himself spoke about the development of various accident statistics worldwide, in Europe, Germany and Thuringia. He emphasized the importance of road safety and suggested possible tools to improve it.

Subsequently, police superintendent Doreen Kurz from the police station Weimar reported on the traffic safety work of the police. The recording, provision and initial evaluation of the accident data by the police forms an important basis for many other methods in traffic safety work.

After this general introduction, a second theme block followed, dedicated to road safety in urban areas. Mr Johannes Vogel, also a member of the Chair of Transport System Planning, gave a presentation on "Traffic accidents as a result of planning and design deficits – in-town". He explained typical safety deficits in the urban area and showed many examples of how bad planning can lead to accidents and conflicts.

The second lecture on the area "in-town" was held by the former member of the Chair, Dipl.-Ing. Andreas Grießbach. He talked about causes and measures to prevent tram accidents. He presented results of a research project carried out at the Chair of Transport System Planning.

The third theme block was dedicated to the out-of-town area. First of all, Mr Philipp Bursian, initiator of the initiative "Road crosses - everyone is one too much" (https://de-de.facebook.com/StrassenkreuzeUnOrteDesSterbens/) talked about his project. Mr Bursian searches for crosses on the streets and researches the story and fate behind the crosses. In this way, he wants to draw attention to the many fatal accidents that still happen today and animate to more caution and consideration in the traffic.

Finally, Prof. Andreas Bark from TH Mittelhessen spoke on traffic accidents as a result of planning and design deficits in out-of-town areas as well as road safety and stock audits. He also explained typical safety deficits and showed many examples that can lead to dangerous situations in traffic on the road.
