Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Koch

The Chair of Intelligent Technical Design is concerned with the application of modern information and communication technology (ICT) during the design, the construction and the operation of civil infrastructure, such as buildings, bridges, tunnels, road and pipe networks. In this regard, we use methods of Building Information Modelling (BIM), Computer Vision and Machine Learning as well as Virtual and Augmented Reality to efficiently and sustainably inform decision makers.

"Intelligent Technical Design refers to a design approach that utilizes advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, to optimize the design process and improve the performance, efficiency, and sustainability of building and infrastructure systems. It integrates data-driven insights, real-time performance monitoring, and machine learning algorithms into the design process to make informed decisions, automate manual processes, and reduce the risk of human error. The goal of Intelligent Technical Design is to create high-performing, sustainable, and efficient building and infrastructure systems." [ChatGPT, 2023]

Two successful master's defenses by Digital Engineering students at ITD

In the new offices of the professorship in Coudraystraße 13A, two master theses could be successfully presented.

Rogerio Antonio Mota Santos dove into the exciting research field of BIM and GIS integration. In the thesis titled "BIM and GIS integration for infrastructure planning", he focused on the generation of IFC alignment objects from GIS data for early rail infrastructure planning in order to build a bridge between both worlds.

Robin Graf's master thesis dealt with the process analysis and implementation of quality assurance processes of BIM models in a planning and executing company. The title was: "Integration of a BIM-based workflow in construction planning for a quality gate before the construction of modular buildings". In the scope of this project, he conducted a requirements analysis in the company, developed a suitable workflow for quality control and piloted it in the context of a case study.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Koch and Judith Krischler were responsible for the scientific supervision. We congratulate Mr. Graf and Mr. Mota Santos on their successful master's theses and wish them all the best for the future!

Our team includes Prof. Koch, Mrs. Engelbert, Mr. Wagner, and several research and student assistants.
