Report on the excursion on 25/26.10.2022

The excursion of the Chair of Construction Engineering and Management on 25/26 October 2022 led a group of 40 students and staff of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar to various destinations in Bavaria.

Our first stop took us to the main plant of KLEBL BAULOGISTIK GMBH in Neumarkt i.d. Oberpfalz. Mr. PRISON guided us through the precast plant, which consists of different stations. The company produces large (up to 50 m long and 100 t heavy) precast elements made of reinforced and prestressed concrete, but also smaller, recurring components. The dimensions of the precast plant were impressive and, above all, the logistics behind it, which thanks to digitalization can now be handled faster, more clearly and more efficiently.

The second stop took us to the NEW CAMPUS PRO7 UND SAT 1 construction project in Unterföhring of the construction company RIEDEL BAU GMBH & CO. KG. This construction project on a 26,000 m² site will be realized in 2 construction phases and comprises more than 400,000 m³ of enclosed space. A total of 63,000 m³ of concrete and 10,000 t of steel will be used in total. The new buildings will house several TV studios, office and conference rooms, as well as recreational areas in the landscaped inner courtyard.

Site manager BENEDIKT POPP took us on a tour of the construction site, which is still in the shell stage, and pointed out the difficulties and challenges of construction.

The last stop took us to DB NETZ AG in Munich for the construction of the 2nd S-Bahn main line. With a total length of 10 km, the 2nd trunk line is planned as an express city train line (S-Bahn). The heart of the extension line is a 7 km long tunnel connecting the main station and the eastern station. The underground intermediate stations required in the process - Hauptbahnhof, Marienhof and Ostbahnhof - will be completely rebuilt.

As part of the construction project, we were allowed to visit the tunnel entrance portal just before the Donnersbergerbrücke bridge. Particularly impressive was a 24 m deep excavation pit, which is being constructed by means of overcut bored pile walls and secured with 9 anchor layers.

After a strenuous but very varied program of site visits, our first day of the excursion ended at the beautifully located and recently modernized youth hostel in the historic walls of Schwaneck Castle in Pullach, in the south of Munich. The cozy hostel allowed us to socialize in the evening and get a good night's sleep for a successful start to the second day.

On the second day of the excursion, we visited bauma, which takes place every three years at the New Munich Trade Fair Center. The bauma is the most important trade fair for the construction and mining machinery industry. In total, more than 3,000 exhibitors displayed numerous machines on an area of over 600,000 m². At bauma, German as well as foreign companies present themselves with spacious exhibition stands, pavilions, open-air designs and event-like demonstrations geared to numerous international visitors. The majority of the exhibiting companies come from the sectors that manufacture machinery and equipment as well as formwork and scaffolding for the construction and building materials industries.

Our excursion group was able to gain special insight into formwork systems and construction machinery and cranes through the guided tours of the stands at DOKA, PERI and LIEBHERR. Especially the possible dimensions of construction machines were impressive.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all participants for their great commitment and friendly support. Special thanks go to the companies KLEBL BAULOGISTIK GMBH, RIEDEL BAU GMBH & CO. KG, DB NETZ AG for the interesting and intensive site and plant tours. We would also like to thank DEUTSCHE DOKA SCHALUNGSTECHNIK GMBH, PERI GMBH and LIEBHERR-INTERNATIONAL DEUTSCHLAND GMBH for the guided tours of their stands and the provision of tickets for bauma in Munich. The students assured us that they experienced two important and extraordinary days during the excursion, during which they were able to gain many new impressions of their future professional field and career opportunities.
