commTRAIL: Municipal management of energy system transformation in rural areas

In rural areas and mostly in smaller municipalities under 10,000 inhabitants, there is hardly any overall energy planning.

Rural municipalities usually lack the competence and the necessary potential to be able to actively tackle the complex processes of energy transition on their own. They face limited financial and personal resources. The aim of the project is to provide municipalities with a tool that enables them to strategically tackle this topic.

During the project software will be developed using publicly available data and key figures to determine the heating and electrical energy demand and to demonstrate the potential for the use of renewable energies. A consortium of several research partners was formed to develop comprehensive solutions to this issue. The chair of building physics of the Bauhaus-university is responsible for the projekt "commTRAIL" where energy aspects and urban-planning issues are examined. In particular, the structural linking of these interdisciplinary aspects is pursued with the aim of showing and supporting complex decision-making processes.

In work packages, the research and development methodology is structured taking into account the multiple requirements from the basic analyses. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar contributes methodological competence as well as experience in the evaluation of economic, energetic and urban planning aspects, whereby the algorithm for the processes within the TRAIL method is to be developed.

From the analysis of the heat and electricity potential as well as the renewable energies, checklists, instructions for action and proposed measures are derived and prioritized, where the practical feedback in the test phase will then take place at the users in four model municipalities.
