Making music during corona - filters to reduce the breathing air when playing wind instruments and singing

Against the background of the COVID-19 pandemic, filters that reduce the spread of breathing air when playing wind instruments and singing were investigated in collaboration with the Chair of Industrial Design.

Playing wind instruments and singing is a big challenge for musicians in the current time. Making music together is only possible under efficacious hygienic precautions and with large distances between the instruments. Investigations at the Chair of Building Physics in cooperation with the Chair of Industrial Design show innovative possibilities to reduce the spread of potentially infectious breathing air when playing wind instruments and singing.

In cooperation with the philharmonic orchestra Thüringen Philharmonie Gotha - Eisenach the spread of breathing air using filters was visualized in front of the schlieren mirror.

The accompanying report of the measurements can be found here.
