Hendrik Heinicke is a designer, photographer and researcher whose practice operates at the intersection of visual communication, social discourse and participation. His work often emerges through exchange with cultural institutions, practitioners and educational organisations, with the aim of conveying design processes as open and accessible forms of practice.
Since September 2026, he has been working as an Artistic Associate at the Professorship of Image–Text-Conception within the Faculty of Art and Design at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
He graduated with a Diploma in Book Art/Graphic Design from the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (HGB) in 2022, specialising in Typography and Editorial Design as well as Type Design. As part of his degree, he developed a publication and exhibition project at the Institute of Anatomy Leipzig addressing ethical principles in science, specifically within the field of medicine during the National Socialist period, as well as the role of design between information, the communication of knowledge and visualisation.
His interest in languages and cultural exchange led him to study at the Universitatea Națională de Arte București (UnArte) and the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris (EnsAD).
During his »Meisterschüler*innen« programme/postgraduate studies for artists at HGB Leipzig, which he completed in 2025, Hendrik Heinicke developed the project »Forms of Protest«, examining the power of the printed word as a medium of empowerment. The »Protest Mono« typeface, developed specifically for the project and produced as a printable typeface in birch wood, combines aesthetic diversity with accessible application. The workshop is understood here as a space for hands-on thinking, exchange and revolt. Through participatory workshops, the project invites participants to give expression to forms of protest and to situate them within public space.
In addition, he has several years of experience in the graphic conception and creative direction of exhibitions and event formats.
During his time at the Paris-based design studio c-album, he worked on the development of a new visual identity for Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral. His work focused on the development of the typeface »Notre Dame Vitrail«, the design of pictograms for a new comprehensive wayfinding system, and the educational format »Tabula«, with presentations at international cultural institutions including the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
A central aspect of his practice is the development of participatory formats in which design can be experienced as a collective process. The classroom is understood as a social space where aesthetic, technical and societal questions intersect.
