Project description

In black and white photographs, we see winding pipes, beading drops falling apart, and supporting hands holding it all together. We see the neon lights that blind us or passing cars that flash as man moves along. The everyday becomes special. The macro shots in particular focus on material and texture. They obscure context and create portraits of objects that seem almost like people, taking over space on their own. The eye is guided by lines and contrasts, lingering on disturbances and chaotic corners that are supposed to remain hidden. We see excitement and calm, boats lying down, posters waving. We see apartment buildings that seem so different and yet serve the same purpose. They seem open or closed. Holes and gaps give insight into the private lives of those who still hope and wish.

At first glance, the photographs seem reduced. At second glance, a new focus emerges. What was once seen is reinterpreted. New things emerge. The prints offer space in the darkroom for creative choices. Shape and texture, shadow and surface come to the fore here and there.

The exhibition is the result of the course ausbelichten, drucken, angucken, beschreiben, which was offered in the wintersemester 2022/23 at the Bauhaus University Weimar by Pio Rahner.
