Project description
The journey is the goal, especially on a bicycle tour. At the accommodation Rest in the Reed on the Elbradweg in Hamburg, even the break becomes a special experience.
Like a spiral, a path winds its way upwards, which connects all the rooms. Equivalent to the hallway inside the building, there is a balcony on the outside. This promotes a better acquaintance among the travellers. The starting point is a ramp leading into a bicycle storage room. Then, public spaces on the south side alternate with bedrooms on the east and west sides. Depending on the size of the group (1-5 persons), the individual room modules can be flexibly connected or sealed off by sliding doors. Other rooms, such as the sanitary facilities, are located in the core of the building. At the upper end of the spiral corridor, travellers finally reach a rooftop terrace, which offers the best view of the banks of the Elbe. The accommodation is largely autonomous thanks to self-check-in, self-catering and laundry flaps, thus providing an inexpensive alternative to the hotel.
Reed is the focus of the construction. It is used as a sustainable insulating material and also appears as a weather-resistant façade material. In combination with clay, wall elements are created that are supported by a wooden skeleton construction.
