Project description

The video work 'A toothless grin' refers to the idea of an uneasy emptiness in our everyday lives caused by constant digital media consumption and the corresponding increasing alienation from the natural world. An experimental video format examines how digital media shape and continue to change our relationship to nature, its representation and our experience of it. Using different art forms and genres, a narrative unfolds about alienation from nature as a result of progressive, total absorption into 'the digital'. The natural world is visualised as increasingly technical/mechanical, deformed, and abstracted; from drone footage to fully computer-generated images created through the use of machine learning in the form of GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) technology.

This video was a commission by the Goethe Institute on the occasion of Kultursymposium 2021 Weimar, was funded by Kreativfonds and Frauenförderfonds of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and exhibited as part of GENERATION NOW in the Weimar Location of Galerie Eigenheim.
