Semester project »Beyond Sparkles«
von Sylvia Debit, Mariam Giguashvili, Lisa Hoffmann, Iva Kolundzija, Francesca Toso, Philippe van Aerde, Anniek Vetter, Fabian Wolff, Paul Zumbrinck

superviced by:
Prof. Jens Geelhaar, Prof. Wolfgang Sattler, Kristian Gohlke M.Sc.

In the project »Beyond Sparkles«, Master students dealt with LED lights and came up with some very unusual ideas for using lamps.

Various disciplines and nationalities met here. Budding product designers worked together with media designers and students from Media Architecture. Only a few of them came from Germany and in total ten countries were represented through the project participants. Their approaches were as different as their cultures and languages.

Sylvia and Anniek presented their own cosy lamps in the town centre of Weimar and observed how the tourists and passersby behaved. Do they turn the lamps on? Do they interact with them? Do they start up conversations with one another and how does this change the atmosphere of the place? Sylvia and Anniek wanted to find out whether public spaces can be illuminated with cosy lights.

Paul, who comes from the USA and has studied in Argentina, sunk his LEDs in water without further ado. A large glass vessel delicately illuminating in the room, the water surface was as smooth as a mirror. Visitors generated waves with their hands, then the whole room lit up red, blue or green – the sparkling reflection of the aqueous light on the wall. Suddenly the room was bathed in a completely different mood. When the water surface calmed the light discreetly withdrew.
