Master project »Invisible by Design«
von Daniela Schmalfeld

superviced by:
Jana Fröhlich, Markus Weisbeck

Design does not always aim to be noticable. Sometimes it can be beneficial to withdraw an object from the visual perception of a possible observer. Through design and technology people have developed different strategies to become as invisible as possible and also nature features different principles of camouflage and disguise.
This exhibition is a masterthesis in the field of visual communication. It explores the boundaries between the visible and the invisible.
The process of seeing can be subdivided into: cognition, differentiation and identifying. For a good concealment it is often sufficient to obstruct one of these subprocesses of seeing so that visual communication between object and subject is impeded.
When designing visual concealment the following main aspects need to be taken into account: the subject‘s range of cognition—what is the subject even able to perceive, differentiate or identify, biologically or technologically? The time—how long does the concealment have to last? And the flexibility—is the concealment meant for one or many observers or backgrounds?
