On Monday, 1 May 2023, the time has finally come again: the daring pilots of the »SpaceKidHeadCup« will race down the soapbox track on Windmühlenstraße. For the 32nd time, the students of the two Weimar universities, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT, are organising one of the annual highlights in Weimar.
»After last year's successful revival, the best soapbox race on the planet Weimar is entering its 32nd round,« the organisers joyfully announce and point out once again the origin of the SKHC's name for those who are unaware: »Incidentally, the original name of the race, »SpaceKidHeadCup«, is derived from the first Weimar soapbox race, which took place as a tribute to Juri Gagarin's flight into space.«
Even if the pilots don't have the journey into space ahead of them, they are still reaching for the stars. They try to get one of the coveted trophies in the two categories »Style« and »Speed«. Every year, this makes for impressive vehicles that often no longer have much to do with the classic »soapbox«.
Soapbox building workshop on the weekend before the race
The students of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will once again be offering a soapbox-building workshop on the weekend before the race in the product designer's backyard of the Van de Velde Building (Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse 7). On Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 April, both from 11 a.m., wild-eyed pilots with less experience can find helping hands, thinking heads and suitable materials (recycled, of course). The opportunity to have some welding done will also be offered again.
Jubilee party in the KET hall
Of course, there will also be a jubilee party this year to celebrate the brave pilots. Starting at 9 p.m., there will be an opportunity to shake a leg in the KET Hall (Straße des 17. Juni 7, 99427 Weimar).
The race has always been organised by students on a voluntary basis and can only be held thanks to the many great volunteers. Helping hands are still needed: If you would like to help with the set-up and dismantling at the race or the party, please send an email to skhc@kulturtragwerk.de.
Organisational matters
The registration of the pilots and the crates will run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Whether the vehicle is ready for the road will be checked by the TÜV team shortly before the final start. The following must be observed for the TÜV sticker: Helmet compulsory, soapbox must be able to brake and steer and must not weigh more than 100 kg. For all those who are aiming for the »style« award, the riders must be able to lift the vehicle and there is a strict ban on confetti.
The starting signal will be given at 1 p.m.
