Starting on 4 June 2026, photographer Yero Adugna Eticha’s »Black in Thüringen« exhibition will be on display in the University Library. Approximately 20 black and white portraits make up the exhibition and feature Black people who like, study, or work in Thuringia. Through his work, Adugna Eticha opens new perspectives on visibility, belonging, and social participation.
The »Black in Thüringen« photography project builds on his earlier works »Black in Berlin« and »Black in Dortmund«. The project highlights the lived realities and perspectives of Afro-Germans and Black Germans in Thuringia. The portraits, which were taken in a studio, combine personal stories with aspects of Thuringia’s culture of remembrance. The goal of the project is to make Black lived experiences more visible as a natural part of society and to create space for empowerment and dialogue.
Yero Adugna Eticha taught at the Faculty of Art and Design at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar during the 2025/2026 winter semester. Together with Prof. Birgit Wudtke, he led the »EVERYDAY ELSEWHERE« project module, which explored street photography as a medium for intercultural exchange. In this module, students from Weimar collaborated with photographers from Addis Ababa and developed joint projects. In October 2025, Adugna Eticha presented his publication »Black in Berlin« as part of a Bauhaus Master’s Lecture.
The »Black in Thüringen« exhibition was created as part of the Winterwerkschau and will be complemented by a programme of events. Following an introduction by Prof. Birgit Wudtke, Yero Adugna Eticha will discuss visibility, representation, and Black life in Thuringia with activist and social worker Josina Monteiro as well as other guests.
