Manipulation is a crucial part of the creative process, where the physical and »mental« identity of things and beings is altered by the artist, resulting with it the artwork. By »mental« identity we refer to Saussure's definition of a linguistic sign, where the linguistic sign unites a meaning and a signifier(1). Visually, Joseph Kosuth's art work One and Three Chairs(2) constructs this principle, the presentation of an actual chair (object/sign), the textual description (definition) and visual representation as image (signifier).
Altering Egos counteracts this order. As viewers we are used to an organized and practical world where everything is made with a specific utility, understandable and relatable to us. This exhibition alters this understanding and relatability, manipulating the relation between the meaning and the signifier of a linguistic sign. An object can be identified by its shape, but not understood by its productive characteristics. The same goes to the manipulated ego's of the artists that work with more human identities. They can be recognised, but only as altered ego.
A new identity is created through the manipulated egos of the artists. A visual conversation is established within the exhibition walls, where the viewer's presence becomes an integral part of this new ego. The interaction between the art and the viewer catalyzes a dynamic transformation, further blurring the boundaries between observer and observed. The alteration in the circumstances of the space, allow for a continuous development of this manipulated ego, until the closing of the exhibition.
