The Professorship »Media Environments« is pleased to present its curriculum for the winter semester 2022/23, which is funded by the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education. With a variety of specialised modules, students can acquire knowledge in DIY, bioart, biodesign and environmental issues across all degree programmes.

From 2 to 31 October 2022, visitors will be able to explore outstanding final projects from the Product and Industrial Design departments of the most renowned German design and art colleges at the Design Campus of the Dresden State Art Collections (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden [SKD]). Milena Huber, Maren Klamser and Antonia Ney of the Faculty of Art and Design are participating in the exhibition. Artistic staff member Almut Nowack will also be represented with her Master’s thesis from HAWK Hildesheim.

Caroline Ektander, geboren 1982 in Schweden, lebt als Kuratorin und Architektin seit mehr als zehn Jahren in Berlin. In ihrer Arbeit beschäftigt sie sich mit umweltgefährdenden Stoffen, Giften und Vergiftungen und deren komplexen Bedingungen. Zurzeit promoviert sie an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in der Fakultät Kunst und Gestaltung über Altlastensanierung in Bitterfeld-Wolfen. Zudem wird sie sich am Chemiestandort, unterstützt vom Kreativfonds der Universität, mit dem dortigen kontaminierten Grundwasser künstlerisch auseinandersetzen. Wissenschaftsredakteurin Stefanie Waske hat sie zu den Hintergründen dieses ungewöhnlichen Forschungsfeldes befragt.

A new subject area was launched on 1 September in the Produktdesign (Product Design) degree programme at the Faculty of Art and Design: »Emerging Technologies and Design«. Dr. Thomas Pearce was appointed to the newly created tenure track junior professor position. What does this title mean and how does this >newbie< intend to shape the field in the Produktdesign (Product Design) degree programme?

Investigating the potential of alternative tools to design type and (typo)graphic forms: How is type design influenced by its tools? Can the use of alternative design tools provoke new forms?

From 15 September to 15 December 2022, the Radio Art Residency will be held by composer, producer, musician and sound designer Warrick Swinney. With his project "The ghostly disappearance of my country's future: a sonic hauntology", the South African-born composer focuses on re-approaching his existence as a recorded being through personal archives.

Millionen Tonnen Plastikabfall hinterlassen Schutzmasken der Corona-Pandemie weltweit. Was, wenn sich das Material recyceln ließe? Sogar das mit Viren verunreinigte? Diese Fragen ließen zwei Studenten der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar nicht mehr los. Per 3D-Drucker zeigten sie, was möglich wäre und schufen eine Zahnbürste aus Maskenmaterial. Ihre Arbeit ist gegenwärtig im Martha Herford Museum für Kunst, Architektur, Design zu sehen.

Thüringens größtes Festival für zeitgenössische Kunst, das Kunstfest Weimar, ist gestartet und lädt bis zum 10. September 2022 dazu ein, Veranstaltungen aus den Bereichen Kunst, Film, Musiktheater, Schauspiel, Tanz und vielem mehr zu erleben. Mit dabei sind auch Projekte in Kooperation mit der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

With a total of six works from various artistic degree programmes at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, students and teaching staff will be presenting themselves at the renowned »Ars Electronica« media art festival in Linz from 7 to 11 September 2022. The installations, concerts and experiments were created in the »Media Art and Design« and »Media Architecture« degree programmes.
