Here you will find information about useful software, central IT services, our e-learning platform »Moodle« and the conference tool »BigBlueButton« for online meetings.
Each student and staff member of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is provided a personal e-mail address, created as follows:
firstname.lastname@uni-weimar.de
This address is routinely used by faculties/departments to send important information to members of the university. Therefore, we strongly recommend logging in to your account on a regular basis. If you wish to use a private e-mail address, please set up the automatic forwarding function. In exceptional cases, it is possible to make changes to the e-mail address which you are issued.
Reading your e-mails with one programme
If you wish to view your e-mails using a programme like Outlook, SeaMonkey, Netscape or Thunderbird, you will first have to configure the programme accordingly. For configuration examples, please click on the respective PDF files in the right column.
Using the central e-mail address book (LDAP)
If you wish to use the central e-mail address book for university staff members, you must first configure your e-mail programme to communicate with the LDAP server. Your programme will require the following information:
Host name: ldap.uni-weimar.de
Basis-DN: o=uni-weimar
Port: 389
The server can only be accessed within the university network (also via VPN).
Webmail
With your web browser, you can access the e-mails sent to your university account at: https://webmail.uni-weimar.de
Webmail allows you to log into your account from anywhere in the world. All you need is an Internet connection and a web browser.
Mail forwarding / Out of Office message
Our system allows you to either forward your mails to a private account, or automatically reply with a personalised Out of Office message.

Together with the DFN-Verein (www.dfn.de), the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar provides users the opportunity to use cloud storage. The Technical University of Berlin is the service provider and uses Nextcloud software.
The cloud service is independently accessible to each participating university. This service can be used for exchanging and synchronizing data. Access may also be granted to external partners.
25GB of storage is typically available for each account.
The service is accessible through the web browser https://cloud.uni-weimar.de/ or through special client software. The client software is automatically accessible on centrally administered Windows systems.
Content (files, directories) are shareable. The e-mail addresses of (external) partners typically have to be specified. If the partner is already registered on cloud.uni-weimar.de, only their name must be entered.
A collaborative file editing function in Büro-Office format is currently being tested. This is based on the open source software Collabora. Access is only available through a browser.
To run courses without attendance, the university uses the conference tool »BigBlueButton« (BBB). This allows groups to meet in virtual rooms, to get in touch with each other via video and sound as well as via public and private chats and to show or share presentations.
To make it easier for you to prepare for digital studies, we have set up a »BigBueButton« test room for you. Via the link below you can enter this room at any time and test the settings of your computer.
We recommend the browsers Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Edge Chromium. All three browsers work on Mac and Windows systems. Important: Please do not use Safari.
Please note that you may meet other testers in the room. Please do not change the basic settings of the virtual room either, otherwise it may no longer function.
