The 2020/2021 winter semester will begin as usual on 1 October 2020 and will end on 31 March 2021.
The winter semester lecture period will take place from 2 November 2020 until 5 February 2021. This will be followed by a two-week examination period. From 21 December 2020 to 3 January 2021 there will be no lectures.
Starting on 16 December 2020, teaching will move to a purely digital format. Essentially no in-person courses may take place at the university during the digital teaching phase, which will continue until the end of the lecture period on 5 February 2021. Each faculty is responsible for making decisions on any exceptions or individual cases where in-person attendance is necessary. Group work is excluded from these exemptions and no exceptions will be made in these cases.
Preparations will continue for in-person exams. At the same time instructors are requested to check whether it is possible to digitally carry out exams.
According to the basic hygiene plan everyone must wear a mask covering the nose and mouth when moving between rooms, i.e. in washrooms, waiting areas, corridors or hallways, foyers, etc. Once you have reached your workspace or seat, you may remove your mask.
You have to register for each course on site, either on paper or electronically with your Thoska. This is necessary to ensure prompt contact tracing in case of any infections arising. Your data will be stored in sealed envelopes or electronically encrypted for four weeks and then erased.
In case of an infection, it is absolutely necessary that you inform us about this via the contact form on our website. Subsequently, we will send you the information on the events you have attended to the Public Health Department. The Public Health Department will decide on any quarantine measures or tests.
If you have any additional questions or uncertainties, you can also send an email to gesundheit[at]uni-weimar.de.
We kindly ask you to check via the BISON portal whether your personal data - such as your residential address in Weimar and availability by phone - are up to date. This is of great importance to ensure contact tracing in the event of an incident.
If you will not be able to complete your studies, either fully or partially, without issue in the winter semester 2020/2021 due to the pandemic, please make use of existing possibilities such as a semester on leave or part-time semester. The Student Office will happily offer advice on this and can be reached by phone +49 (0)3643 - 58 2323 or e-mail studium[at]uni-weimar.de.
The deadline to apply for a semester on leave or part-time semester for the 2020/2021 winter semester has been extended until 31 March.

FAQ on traveling to Germany by the Federal Ministry of Health
To allow the teaching and studying in all study programmes at the BauhausUniversität Weimar during the 2020 summer semester and the 2020/21 winter semester while taking into consideration the restrictions on public and university life that have resulted from the coronavirus pandemic, various regulations have been adopted regarding exams and deadlines.
You can read all regulations in detail in the»General regulations for managing the effects of the co-rona virus pandemic on studying and academic affairs«.
Various formats have been designed for the digital execution of examinations:
Supervised written remote/online examinations may not be done one students’ computers.
Deadlines for term papers, seminar papers, projects, or final papers may be extended as deemed appropriate by the responsible examination committee and may deviate from examination regulations if justified. This applies in particular to cases of difficulty accessing scientific literature due to library closures, lab closures, and workshop and workroom closures. The examination committee may also delegate extension decisions to the examiners.
The deadline by which all assignments required by the degree programme according to the respective study and examination regulations must be submitted is extended by the summer semester (6 months).
If you have found yourself in financial difficulty due to the conoavirus pandemic, there are various support services you can take advantage of:
Interest-Free short time loan through Studierendenwerk Thüringen
You can apply for an interest-free social loan of up to 800 euros through Studierendenwerk Thüringen. Thuringian universities – including the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar – are offering the student community a wide range of services and support. Half of the loan amount is taken over by the State of Thuringia in order to relieve the students financially. This means that out of a maximum of 800 euros in loans, a maximum of 400 euros will have to be repaid.
Detailed criteria can be found at https://www.stw-thueringen.de/english/social/financial-hardship-loans/index.html.
Interim financial aid funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)
Interim financial aid provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is intended to help those students who can prove that they are faced with financial hardship caused by the pandemic, who need immediate help and are unable to overcome their pandemic-related hardship by making use of other support. Interim financial aid can be applied for by German and foreign students who are enrolled at a public or state-recognised higher education institution in Germany.
Depending on the proven need, between 100 euros and 500 euros can be paid out as a non-repayable grant. The application may be submitted separately for these months: November 2020, December 2020, January 2021, February 2021 and March 2021.

In addition, the application process has been made easier with new forms and the possibility of submitting the application online at www.bafoeg-thueringen.de. In this way, students who have not applied for BAföG in the past due to the high bureaucratic effort involved should also be able to benefit from it.
