Information on the start of the semester
Dear students, dear new students,
Due to the pandemic, we will also have to work with restrictions in teaching in the winter semester 2021/22. Events will take place in presence, partial presence with alternation between online and on-site events or online. We will continue to carefully consider the constantly changing current developments surrounding the Corona pandemic and consider them in our planning.
We update this website regularly, so please visit this page frequently to keep up to date.

The hygiene concepts developed in the faculty have worked well over the past two semesters during the time when teaching could take place in presence and will continue to apply. These include concepts for use of space, social distancing and contact tracing. The regulations requiring the wearing of medical mask in the rooms where the distance of 1.50 metres between persons cannot be maintained still continue to apply. This aims to improve self-protection and the protection of others and is aligned with the University's new Corona regulations.
The positive experiences of the previous semesters encouraged us that you, as students, make every effort to comply with the hygiene and health rules in the rooms and on the grounds of the university. Together, we can ensure the health and safety of our entire campus community in the winter semester as well!
In order to provide the greatest possible protection against infection for all university members, the most important instructions for behaviour in the buildings and on campus have been compiled based on the university's hygiene plan. This includes, among other things, a general obligation to wear a mouth and nose cover in public areas of the buildings. Please read instructions carefully and observe the recommendations and rules – this is the only way we will be able to cope with a semester of attendance during the Corona pandemic.
Student workspaces and studios can be used by students. Due to the pandemic, however, we unfortunately have fewer student workspaces available throughout the Faculty of Art and Design.
The places are assigned by the teachers. The lecturers inform students about the hygiene rules that apply (see the basic hygiene plan of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar: keeping a distance, regular ventilation, wearing masks if the minimum distance is not maintained, contact tracking via Thoska or completed handouts), and students commit to these rules by signing them. A room plan is available for the student workrooms under hygiene rules, which is to be maintained.
As of winter semester 21/22, working on weekends is possible again with a Thoska activation. Please note that you must ensure the necessary contact tracking on your own responsibility.
NEW: Equipment can now be lent out in the Photo Workshop, Video Workshop and Media.Point during opening hours. You can find more information on the websites of the respective workshops. We ask you to continue to coordinate larger loans with the staff in the workshops at least 14 days in advance.
The staff in the workshops work in close dialogue with the degree programmes. Introduction courses for first-semester students are also organised together with the lecturers and take place in fixed small groups. You can find out the dates for these in the courses for first-semester students.
If you have specific questions or would like to make an appointment to use the workshops, please contact the respective workshop masters. For the decentralised workshops and laboratories of the professorships of Media Art and Design, please contact the respective teaching associates (by telephone or e-mail). Appointments made in advance must be kept and will be automatically cancelled in case of no-show.
Please note that due to the pandemic, the number of workplaces in the workshops is still reduced.
Access to the Van de Velde Building and the rooms in Marienstraße 1a and 1b is possible from Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. via specified entrances and exits. For lecture and project rooms, access will be granted via Thoska after your admission to the respective courses or during the presence of a lecturer.
The workshops are staffed at the usual times; it is essential to make an appointment before working on site. Please note that the opening hours of the individual areas may continue to be adjusted due to the pandemic.
Our course catalogue will be online from 1 September under www.uni-weimar.de/bison/en. There you can gain an overview of the courses offered in the coming semester. The presentations of the projects and courses in the form of project presentations are linked in the individual courses.
For students who are spending an exchange semester at the faculty of Art and Design, there will be a separate welcome event in English with Jirka Reichmann (International Counsellor).
