Maria Anna Tappeiner is a filmmaker/director focusing on artist portraits and art documentaries. Her films combine the observation of the work process and in-depth conversations with the artists about their practice. The lecture revolves around the question of how one can approach and understand the artist and his oeuvre through film. To what extend does the presence of a camera influence the content? How much is being staged? By commenting on excerpts from her documentaries Maria Anna Tappeiner will give an insight into her practice and reflect on different ways to approach art and artists through film while touching upon the limits of what film can do. The lecture is followed by a screening of her film about the American artist „Richard Serra – To See Is to Think“ (©WDR/ZDF 2006, 45 min.).
Maria Anna Tappeiner holds an MA in art history. Since 1998 she has worked as a freelance curator and fim-maker for German television, producing documentaries about William Kentridge, Richard Serra, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Nam June Paik among others.
