15.11. Radio Talk with meLê yamomo: "...and when I speak, my brown skin and the entire ecology vibrate"

The Professorship »Experimental Radio« cordially invites you to the third radio talk with international guests this semester. On Tuesday, 15 November 2022, 7 pm, the artist and scientist meLê yamomo is the guest. He will talk about his biography as a traveller between continents, cultures, artistic practices and academic disciplines. In his work, meLê yamomo explores the themes of sonic migration, queer aesthetics and post-decolonial sound research.

Time:
Tuesday, 15 November 2022, 7 p.m.

Location:
Glass box in the Limona
Steubenstrasse 8
99423 Weimar

The talk will be held in English.

meLê yamomos work centers around questions of (de-)colonization. Currently he is leading the project »Decolonizing Southeast Asian Sound Archives« (DeCoSEAS). The project proposes the decolonization of heritage along three orientation points: the improvement of access to heritage, the transfer of agency to stakeholders of their heritage, and the diversification of the dialogue about this heritage’s curation. Questions around the inclusion of voices that have hitherto remained unheard in discourses about heritage are part of meLê’s yamomos artistic and scientific practice.

He tries to challenge frequently made distinctions in science and art through asking questions about the in-between: What lies in between theory and aesthetics? Situatedness and migration? Sounding and listening? Performing and perception? The universal self and the colonial other? What understandings transpire in imagining beyond social imaginations of racial, national, cultural, gender or disciplinary borders and boundaries? He is also asking how a focus on sound and listening changes what we know and could transform us towards a postmigrant society.

About meLê yamomo:
meLê yamomo currently lives and works in Amsterdam and Berlin. He is Assistant Professor of Performance Studies, Sound Studies, Artistic Research and Decoloniality at the University of Amsterdam. He is author of »Sounding Modernities: Theater and Music in Manila and the Asia Pacific 1869 – 1946« (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018). meLê yamomos is project leader of »Sonic Entanglements« and »Decolonizing Southeast Asian Sound Archives«.
