Award Ceremony in Shenzhen on April 30, 2015.

Both awardees, Hoai Phuong Tran and Xuan Duong Bui are studying at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in the international master course "European Urban Studies" since 2103, a programme known since 1999 for its commitment to an interdisciplinary design practice. Both students spent their third semester at Model Project Partners in the Netherlands. The large proportion of knowledge exchange with international Model Project Partners is one of the basic principles of the master programme to ensure international Good Practice knowledge for a holistic approachin urban development. Before studying in Weimar, they both received a Master in Human Settlements at the KU Leuven after having graduated with a Bachelor in Architecture and Planning at the National University of Civil Engineering in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Auszug der beiden Studierenden zu ihrem Entwurf
Extract from the students' design concept

"After 30 years of “miracle” development, with the changing trend in economic development and delta-scale connection, it is now necessary for Shenzhen to conduct a city-wide urban regeneration. The project is a proposal to provide urban living focusing on the accessibility and maximizing the socioecomic influence of the “1 hour zone” infrastructure while reinforcing and accommodating the urban living of current inhabitant and the new wave of migrants.

Parallel to that urban development, the proposal considers the protection and connection of green and blue elements, for example through protecting a Mangrove forest is integrated in the city green system, serving at the same time to prevent erosion and tidal waves. Green buffers and carbon forests surrounding industries and highway as compulsory to reduce greenhouse gases

Instead of a comprehensive master plan, strategic projects are proposed. With the speed and scope of China urban development, this approach allows quick, but at the same time, meticulous urban interventions. Each project is a proposal of how to integrate delta- and city-scale scheme and infrastructure to small scale urban daily life and how public spaces and mobility can be designed in the context of the city as a resource."
