Kicking off the »Long Night of academic writing 2023« in the university library

At the Long Night of academic writing in the university library in June, this year’s tagline »who is writing« was thoroughly debated and explored in presentations, talks and workshops. Many questions were asked about the things to come with a mix of curiosity and critical observation. On the Long Night website you can find impressions of the evening as well as more information on the event.

On June 20th Luise Matthes started working as an »Open Source Evangelist« for the SCC and the whole university. By working with Ms Matthes we intend to emphasize our efforts in using more open source software and to kick off an open source initiative (OSI). The library has already taken a first step by equipping all computers with LibreOffice in addition to the Microsoft Office package.
To help all library visitors to better work with LibreOffice, Luise Matthes is now available for support by mail at luise.matthes@uni-weimar.de. From the end of July, it will also be possible to reach her by telephone.
Ms Matthes is also available for group training sessions, which could be held in the library’s PC pool. To celebrate the start of our OSI, Luise Matthes will hold an »open source code service« on July 14th from 1pm to 2 pm on the summeary stage in front of the university main building. »Humans of Weimar« project brochure

Who are we, who is society and what happens when we leave our filter bubble and engage with strangers without preconceptions? The exhibition »Humans of Weimar« present interviews done as part of a student organized learning and teaching project (Bauhaus Modul). They are open talks about the personal life situations of people who were asked in public in Weimar. The results will be shown a spart of this year’s summaery (July 13th-16th) in the university library’s entrance area as well as in the lobby of the Weimar main train station, and will be collected in a brochure that will be available in both these places and elsewhere. You can also find the project on Instagram.

Suspense in autumn! In cooperation with Stadtkulturdirektion Weimar, the university library will organize a very special reading in September. Volker Kutscher is known for his captivating crime novels, especially the successful series about Berlin inspector Gereon Rath. Kutscher will be reading from his novel "Der stumme Tod" (2009), which is set in spring 1930 in Berlin film circles, after which a talk with library director Dr. Frank Simon-Ritz will address subject like the novel's historic background and the transition phase from silent to talking film.
The reading will be held on September 29th at 7pm in the university's main lecture hall. Tickets are available in the Weimar tourist information (Markt 10) as well as online (regular price €8, for pensioners €5 Euro, for university and school students as well as for owners of the Weimar-Pass €1).
